7 DAY ORANGUTAN & NATURE TOUR IN PALANGKA RAYA & TANJUNG PUTING
A special combination tour to enable you to see the work of 2 famous and successful orangutan rehabilitation centres in Central Kalimantan. Although orangutan habitat is threatened by forest clearance and annual fires, Central Kalimantan is still home to the largest surviving wild populations in the world.
DAY 1
PALANGKA RAYA – START CRUISE – KATIMPUN
(StartsTuesday)
Meet at Palangka Raya your hotel or at the airport for transfer to your boat in Palangka Raya harbour to start your journey. Cruise past the stilted and floating houses of the provincial capital and continue upstream along the forest lined river, passing villages. We stop at the village of Petuk Katimpun and walk along boardwalks to visit the small library foundation. The boat continues upstream to a beautiful black water lake system, where we take canoes at sunset. Later we find a quiet location for overnight. [L/D]
DAY 2
PALAS ISLAND – BOS – SEI GOHONG
The boat moves up the Rungan River as you enjoy breakfast. On arrival to Palas Island, a pre-release island operated by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS), take a motorized canoe to observe the orangutans and later continue to the BOS Education Center where orangutans are awaiting release in socialization cages. Learn about the BOS history and rehabilitation programs.
Return to the boat and enjoy a leisurely lunch on board while cruising to Sei Gohong village. The boat will continue upstream passing Kaja and Bangamat islands, Orangutan pre-release islands. Here we transfer to small canoes to have closer observation of the orangutans before heading for a refreshing swim in the black water lake, if river water level is sufficient.
Return to the boat for dinner and overnight in a quiet location. [B/L/D]
DAY 3
SEI GOHONG – KANARAKAN
Early morning short transfer to Tangkiling Hill by car, to visit Dayak cultural spirit houses and make the climb to the top of the hill. After breakfast, we depart for Kanarakan, passing the orangutan islands. In Kanarakan we are met by the village elder with Dayak Ngaju welcoming ceremony then stroll around with him to see the village home gardens, rubber field & rubber tapping demonstration, and other village livelihoods. Visit to the elder’s house and enjoy the traditional spices coffee while sharing stories.
Return to boat for lunch and cruise downstream to Sei Gohong. Overnight nearby. [B/L/D]
DAY 4
SEI GOHONG – PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI
After breakfast, the boat cruises to Sei Gohong for check out. Leave the boat early for air-conditioned car transfer to Palangka Raya airport to pick up the flight to Pangkalan Bun. On arrival at Pangkalan Bun airport, a guide will pick you up and then transfer to Kumai by car (approximately 30 minutes). Upon arrival in Kumai, check in to your cabin on board the KM Sekonyer and the boat moves downstream to explore the nipah palm mangrove and wildlife along the Sekonyer River. Lunch is served on board. Late afternoon, observe the proboscis monkey and other primates along the river.
The KM Sekonyer is a traditional klotok, a wooden river boat about 18 m x 3m. We have rebuilt her to include 3 cabins below, and viewing deck above, furnished comfortably, where we can view the rain forest as it glides by. Overnight on the boat. [B/L/D]
DAY 5
CAMP LEAKEY – BOAT/LODGE
After breakfast, the KM Sekonyer travels up river for about 21⁄2 hours and then up a side creek to Camp Leakey where the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest and also known as research center for Orangutan. Trekking through tropical rainforest searching for wildlife, wild orangutan, birds and other primate as well as tropical jungle plant. Back to the boat for lunch then witness feeding time at 2 pm for old rehabilitation orangutan given additional foods. Overnight on the boat.
DAY 6
PONDOK TANGGUY – PESALAT – TANJUNG HARAPAN – BOAT/LODGE
After breakfast, boat down the river to Pondok Tanggui which is a rehabilitation center for the ex-captive orangutans and see feeding time around 9 am. Continue to Pesalat where we will have the opportunity to trek in the forest to observe the wildlife and see reforestation project. We can also plant a seedling there by donation, to help the project. In the afternoon, visit Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center to witness another feeding time around 3 pm. After that, we may visit a village near the national park. Boat down the river to the Nipah palm area where we can see the beautiful fireflies when the weather is good. Overnight on the boat. [B/L/D]
DAY 7
TANJUNG PUTING – KUMAI – DEPARTURE TO AIRPORT
Boat returns to Kumai for transfer to the airport. Tour ends.
